Teachable moments
"Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up" Duet 11:19 (Duet 6:7, Proverbs 22:6, Isaiah 38:19)
I love great teaching moments. My daughter Kayla attended Montessori school during her formative years. Her teacher was an English woman who told me something I'll never forget; she said: "use every opportunity in life as a teaching moment for your child." Even though my daughter is a teenager now, I still utilize every moment as a teaching moment or for great conversation.
So today as we were riding home from our daily school pickups, we found ourselves at a four-way stop that intersected rural two-way streets. I noticed that the car in front of us crossed over the intersection and moved to the side of the road. As I looked further up the road, I noticed that a funeral possession was approaching us, so we knew to wait. Even further down the road was an ambulance weaving through the cars, which eventually caused the members of the funeral possession to pull over to the side of the road. The word "precedence" popped into my head. I immediately turned to my daughter to ask her "okay, what just happened?" I was excited and full of joy because we haven't had this kind of banter in a while. She could have answered the question several ways....from a spiritual standpoint, from a physical or scientific standpoint, from a judicial standpoint, from a moral standpoint, or from a logical or illogical standpoint, or all the above. I wasn't looking for a correct or incorrect answer, but rather I was curious to find out what her natural bend toward learning, understanding and perceiving the world in which she lived. I was curious about her perspective. I was also looking to see if she would even consider the element of "precedence or protocol."
....Instead, she criticized my driving, talked about the police's inability to keep the procession in order after the ambulance passed, then she said the ambulance's emergency was greater than the funeral procession. Laughter and Joy filled me at that moment. I love being a mom.
Prayer: Jesus make me just like you, so I can walk, talk and teach along every road.
